Buttons A Passementerie Workshop Manual Gina Barrett Mark Barrett Ninya Mikhaila Beatrix Nutz MA 9780957324312 Books Reviews
- Line drawings of steps and color photographs of examples make this a great book for re-enactors, costumers, or fiber artists--anyone who wants to know how to make a variety of buttons for historic costumes or to embellish contemporary work. I'm recommending that my guild purchase a copy for its library. (I'm not sharing my copy!)
- Great book! Gina Barrett is the expert in this field, and this book is full of clear directions and color photographs for making beautiful thread covered buttons. I appreciate the historical references and examples discussed in the book. I also recommend her dvds.
- Wonderful book. Great addition to my Fiber Library!
- Great book!
- Gina Barrett's workshop manual offers clear and concise step-by-step instructions through full color photos, line drawings, and text that will allow you to create many styles of thread-wrapped, wheel, crochet, needle lace, and embroidered buttons commonly seen on garments throughout all historic periods. Numerous antique examples from British collections are included, and a contributed case study of two 15th century Austrian buttons are included and their fabrication explained. The manual stands alone, but it may also be seen as a printed companion to her series of two instructional dvds on the subject of button making "Making Buttons" and "Making More Buttons". This title is available for fulfillment directly from Gina in the UK; so, it is not out of print, and she ships promptly via air mail. Efficient and trouble-free on-line payment facilitates the transaction. For those who may have struggled to create period buttons by consulting other available titles on the subject, Gina has managed to demystify the process. Her manual instructs, inspires, and encourages a revival of the art and a far greater understanding and appreciation of a craft, which sadly has been eliminated by factory production. For those who simply seek to understand how these embellishments were produced, this volume is equally helpful and is a worthy addition to any textile curator or conservator's bookshelf. For historical re-enactors who seek unique fasteners beyond those in current production, Gina's instructions will inspire and instruct you to customize your garments.
