The Grief Club is Melody Beattie's profoundly personal, powerfully healing book to help readers through life's most difficult times.

Part memoir, part self-help book, part journalism, The Grief Club is a book of stories bound together by the human experience of loss in its many forms such as death, divorce, drug addiction, and the tumultuous yet tender process of recovery. It's a book you need to read and share.

Twenty years ago, Codependent No More established Melody Beattie as a pioneering voice in self-help literature and endeared her to readers who longed for healthier relationships. Over the years, Melody has invited readers into her life with several more best-selling books--each punctuated with her trademark candor and intuitive wisdom.

"The book title says it all; "The Grief Club: The Secret to Getting Through All Kinds of Change". We think of 'grief' as something one goes through only when death occurs. Not true. Many life situations can cause 'grief'. The book's chapters include the grief we experience when a child or someone we deeply love dies but also: Remembering changes: Facing Alzheimer's disease, Breaking into change, Losing someone to suicide, Wrestling with Change: Losing Marriage, Career, and Home, Destined to Change: When Dreams Die, and many more.
Each chapter contains knowledge and wisdom to help us cope with change. As I read chapters that did not 'apply' to me, I easily thought of a friend that would benefit from that chapter.
Melody Beattie has a gift of sharing her wisdom, she is my hero!"

The Grief Club The Secret to Getting Through All Kinds of Change Melody Beattie 9781592853496 Books Reviews

  • I can't quite explain it but this book has been a great resource. I haven't read through it completely and I'm not reading it cover to cover. From time to time when I'm feeling bad, I pick it up and choose a chapter. Although it is a bit heavy and sad, I find it a great solace. It reminds me that my feelings are okay. To my surprise, I use this more than any other Beattie book I have.
  • This book is a stunner! I bought it for a friend who is dealing with grief and thought I would leave her book on codependency till later. Well! This book dealt with both and has been an enormous help in the realisation of what codependency has done and is doing and also to understand grief from the past to the present, intertwined with codependency. An incredible resource and one that has brought hope and knowledge into our lives.Yes, pick chapters that interest you but go back and read the lot. You will be amazed the threads you pick up in each chapter.
  • I love Melody Beattie's writing style--direct, friendly, heartfelt, gentle and yet firm--and with ideas/exercises at the end of each chapter. I am glad she mentions at the start you should read all the chapters, not just the ones pertaining to "your" loss (divorce, death of a child, your medical or financial losses, etc). She lets us know loss is a normal part of being human, and by reading the other chapters not only did i gain information about some other loss (Hepatitis C for instance)--it heped me see compassion all around for others and softened my heart toward others as well as myself. I went thru a divorce, alcoholic spouse, loss of parent, and now a loved one with cancer--her tips for getting well, opening the heart amidst suffering, coping, healing are wonderful--like a balm on a sore heart.
  • This book is so well written. After each chapter, she gives you some "homework assignments" that assist you in
dealing with grief. She lost her son. So whether your grief is 20 years old or 3 days old, it doesn't matter. She
knows this emotion and helps you understand it better, deal with it, and continue dealing with it as you find
your way through life without that loved one. It's excellent!

  • This book provided me with much needed validation after the " death" of my husband to a traumatic brain injury. After six years of waiting for the man I married to come back, I finally was able to let go and realize that I am a widow. His body is still alive but he is no longer with us. Thank you for helping me work through the grief and pain of the loss of what I had foolishly thought would be a marriage for life.
  • Practical, wise, heartfelt and gentle support for getting through all kinds of loss. I am immensely grateful this book was recommended to me.
  • Another outstanding book by Melody Beattie. I love her writing style. It is very "comfortable", easy to read, but very powerful. Her use of stories, including her own, makes it easy to relate to your own life and get the messages she is giving.
