Mark Radcliffe takes a record from each year of his life, using the song as a starting point from which to reach out and pull together a wonderfully entertaining catalogue of memories and asides about British culture. And, as one would expect from this unique and popular broadcaster, the tunes he lists are not the usual suspects.

"If you are a fan of music (pop and rock and R&B, with perhaps an emphasis on "alternative" sounds in the '80s and '90s) chances are you will enjoy this book a lot. Although music is the inspiration, Radcliffe doesn't limit himself to rambling about the songs he likes. As the blurb on the back cover notes, this book "will appeal not to just music lovers, but to fans of popular culture everywhere."

That said, I also think it's safe to say that the target audience for this book is music fans in the UK. Some of the non-musical names that Radcliffe talks about in this book are very British ones and will be lost to readers in most other parts of the world. As someone who grew up in the USA during the same period that Radcliffe was raised in Northern England, we certainly share some of the same musical inspirations, but when makes references to British TV shows, British football players, and politicians, I don't have a clue as to what he's talking about!

Radcliffe was a popular radio D.J. in England for the past three decades and his tales of those days, especially meeting various musicians, are very entertaining. Not only are the tales fascinating, this is also a frequently very funny book. Radcliffe has a flair for comedy and it shows in his writing. But it's not just goofy stuff. He is also a talented writer and pens some very astute and emotionally moving passages too. I dare say, you won't be bored with this book. Plus, most of the songs he picks are truly great ones, and not ones that you might expect either."
