David Gibson uses 3D visual representations of sounds in a mix as a tool to explain the dynamics that can be created in a mix. This book provides an in-depth exploration into the aesthetics of what makes a great mix. Gibson’s unique approach explains how to map sounds to visuals in order to create a visual framework that can be used to analyze what is going on in any mix.
Once you have the framework down, Gibson then uses it to explain the traditions that have be developed over time by great recording engineers for different styles of music and songs. You will come to understand everything that can be done in a mix to create dynamics that affect people in really deep ways.
Once you understand what engineers are doing to create the great mixes they do, you can then use this framework to develop your own values as to what you feel is a good mix. Once you have a perspective on what all can be done, you have the power to be truly creative on your own – to create whole new mixing possibilities.
It is all about creating art out of technology. This book goes beyond explaining what the equipment does – it explains what to do with the equipment to make the best possible mixes.

The Art of Mixing A Visual Guide to Recording Engineering and Production David Gibson 9780815369493 Books Reviews
- Still haven't read all the way through it, but I really dig the imagery of how sound fits together. It's a bit dated graphics now, but the point is the same. Pretty cool to visualize how to mix (I'm a very visual person, whether it's this or instructions on how to put something together, etc.).
I highly recommend it! - A mix clinic!
- I am an audio professional with many years of experience in all aspects of audio and video production. This book thoroughly explains and covers sound production, effects and mixing as well as covering many advanced concepts and "tricks of the trade". Several useful charts on instrument EQ that alone are worth the price of the book. Gibson also provides extensive "visual representations" of audio concepts - this is an outstanding teaching aide and tool (these pictures are definitely worth a thousand words).
I highly recommend this book to those who desire to expand their knowledge of audio production - amateur to professional. - Awesome book for experienced mixers, like my friend who recommended it to me, and newbies like myself. You will never hear music again the same way once you read this book!
- well worth the money. you'll begin to mentally visualize where to place tracks not only in your own mix but provokes you to carefully listen and visualize track placement, eq, panning, effects used in on tracks you listen to. You'll get ideas just by listening to your favorite songs
- This book is excellent and really delves into the topic of mixing better than any other reference I've found. The author's 3d plots are a really useful tool for visualization. I had a basic working knowledge of mixing before reading this book and feel that I have a much better grasp of the subject material afterwards. Mixing is of course something that you can only master through actual practice -- you can't just read about it. However, this book will make it much easier to get your mixes up and running.
- I am only half way through this book but I am impressed. Orignally I caught a glimpse of this book in a guitar center and decided to shop around for one and found the best price was on .
The book is great for a beginner/intermediate person who is interested in prodcution and engineering. It really helps you visualize what your listening to and helps you train your ears. The book doesnt use large technical terms so it is very easy to understand.
overall a great read and a must have for the bookshelf! - Gibson offers a simplistic view of the mixing process - imagining colored spheroids in a 3D space as a way to visualize a stereo mix. There are a couple of good points, but they're buried and not obvious. As a musician and home-studio engineer I found this book mostly useless. It might help someone just starting out, but if you know what a mixer, compressor and effects unit are, read Bobby Owinsky's "The Mixing Engineer's Handbook" instead.
